Incorporated in 1873, European settlers first came to the area in the early 1840s. New building such as a sawmill, gristmill and a new store brought new settlers to the area. At first the population grew slowly, rising to 3,695 in 1960. The city grew to almost 18,000 in 1970 when changes removed the framing community from the area, making way for more residents. Exploding to around 72,000 residents by 1980, the population continued to rise, reaching 269,776 residents as of the 2010 census.

Plano is currently a hub for many large corporate headquarters such as Alliance Data, Dell, Cinemark Theaters, Denbury Research, Dr. Pepper Snapple Group. Ericcson, Frito-Lay, HP Enterprise, J.C. Penney, Pizza Hut, Tent-A-Center, Siemens Software, Toyota and many others. This influx of corporate headquarters started during the 1980’s with J.C. Penney and Froto-Lay which helped encourage more growth.
